An Interview With: Charly Bliss
Straight outta Brooklyn, NY comes the epically fuzzed ‘Charly Bliss’ – a four piece bubble-grunge band, looking to take the musical scene by storm. The band consists of members: Eva Hendricks (Vox and Guitar), Spencer Fox (Vox and Guitar), Sam Hendricks (Drums) and Dan Shure (Bass).
With their recent single release of ‘Ruby’ Charly Bliss have managed to turn heads and feature on multiple top 10 lists around the USA. The band’s latest single can be summed up as an almost ‘perfect homage to early 90’s fuzz grunge’ while creating their own perfected stylized approach to a modern era. Being deemed as ‘bubble-grunge’ perfectly sums up the raw, yet friendly sound that they produce. Enough to punch you straight in the face with their melodic tones, yet still enough to have you up and shaking about.
I was lucky enough to get in touch with the band themselves, to ask a few key questions to let us into the mind and lives of ‘Charly Bliss’. Below are the questions as followed –
Q: What is the story behind your recent hit ‘Ruby’?
A: I (Eva Hendricks) wrote the lyrics to Ruby about my therapist. A few years ago I developed a totally irrational/unfounded fear of fainting and it became really hard to do a lot of the stuff that I love to do. This song was meant to be a thank you to my therapist for helping me cope with that fear and start feeling like myself again.
Q: What would be the most memorable gig you’ve played and why?
A: It’s so hard to pick! Maybe it would be playing Music Hall of Williamsburg with Sleater Kinney. I think we all felt like we were having a crazy out of body experience, it seemed too cool to be true!!
Q: Does ‘Charly Bliss’ have a tour lined up anytime soon?
A: No tours as of right now, we’re focusing on trying to wrap up everything with the album so that we can release it as soon as possible!! But we definitely can’t wait to be touring again soon.
Q: How did ‘Charly Bliss’ form?
A: Sam and Eva are brother and sister, Dan and Eva met doing musical theatre together in middle school. A few years later, Dan introduced Eva to Spencer while waiting in line at a Tokyo Police Club show at Webster Hall in 2009!
Q: What’s it like being a musician in NYC?
A: It’s really exciting to know that any night of the week you can go see a really really good show at any one of a million different venues. It’s definitely exciting to be making music around so many other very good and nice musicians.
Q: What’s the ‘Charly Bliss’ pre-show ritual?
A: C’mon pappy, listen up, listen up, listen up, listen up, listen up, listen up.
(Screamed many times while stretching)
