Lost ‘Pilot’ Episode of Batman: The Animated Series Has Surfaced
Batman: The Animated Series is notably one of the greatest animated dramas of all time.
First mentioned via Batmanplanet.com a video of the Lost Pilot episode of Batman: the animated series has surfaced via facebook.
Even though it’s seen as iconic and timeless in the eyes of many today, it’s hard to imagine that, it too, had to start somewhere. As part of their pitch to Warner Brothers, Bruce Timm and his crew put together a small animated short that would later serve as a template for the show going forward. It was an unconventional pilot episode but was so immediately eye-catching and stylistic, that it guaranteed Batman: The Animated Series’ spot in history.
The video above is what was submitted to executives at Warner Brothers while considering the funding of a Batman animated show. The executives were so happy with the darker style of Batman, that perfectly mirrored the then-recent Tim Burton films, that they told creators to double down on the darkness. That, as well as the fluidity and style of Batman’s movements, were specifically carried over to the making of the actual show, and is part of what makes Batman: The Animated Series stand out so much.
This little pilot serves as somewhat of a ‘lost episode’ of the show because it has never aired on TV and is only available to the public because it was leaked many years later (after critical success).
