Have you ever noticed your worries get louder after your third coffee?

You're not imagining it. What you eat and drink can escalate a tiny voice into an all-consuming spiral. And for people with OCD, it can seem like there's no escape from that spiral.

Here's the problem:

Many people dismiss obsessive worrying as something that only happens “in your head”. However, your body has a huge impact. Caffeine and blood sugar spikes can:

  • Speed up your heart

  • Trigger a stress response

  • Make intrusive thoughts feel more urgent

The good news? These are some of the easiest things to change.

Let's dig in…

Here's What's Covered:

  1. Why Diet Matters For OCD And Anxiety

Why Diet Matters For OCD And Anxiety

OCD is actually quite common. Approximately 3% of Australians will suffer from OCD in their lifetime. On average OCD begins around age 19.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is fuelled by obsessions (intrusive thoughts) and compulsions (rituals performed to relieve anxiety). OCD is not caused by diet. However, diet can fan the flames.

Think about it:

When your body starts feeling jittery/shaky, your brain tries to find a cause. For someone with OCD, that cause is usually the obsession. A racing heart becomes "proof" that something bad will happen.

That’s why there’s a bigger focus on the overall package of care – right down to nutrition habits and all the way through to OCD therapy costs. A great clinician will ask you about your sleep, caffeine consumption and eating routines before crafting a plan together. Personalisation is the name of the game with tailored OCD therapy, which works around your life rather than making you fit around the therapy. Also, when you know exactly what factors into the cost of sessions, it’s easier to invest long-term.

How Caffeine Fuels Obsessive Worry

Caffeine is the world's most widely used mood altering substance. Coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola, even chocolate… People can't seem to get enough.

Here's why: Caffeine blocks a chemical in the brain called adenosine. Adenosine makes you relaxed and tired. When it's blocked, your body produces more adrenaline.

More adrenaline = more alarm bells.

In 2024, researchers found caffeine increased anxiety among healthy individuals — and it spiked considerably at doses over 400 mg. That's about 4 times the caffeine you'd find in a typical cup of coffee.

Now picture what that does to a brain that's already on high alert.

The physical signs of too much caffeine looks a lot like anxiety:

  • Racing heart

  • Sweaty palms

  • Restlessness

  • Trouble sleeping

In OCD, these sensations don't stay contained in the body. They get "interpreted" as a threat. A minor tremor can launch a checking ritual. An increased heart rate can lead to fear of disease.

Caffeine doesn't create an obsession. It turns up the volume.

And there's a hidden twist…

Caffeine disturbs sleep. Bad sleep makes intrusive thoughts more difficult to dismiss the following day. So individuals consume more caffeine to power through their morning. Repeat.

The Blood Sugar Rollercoaster.

This is the part most people miss.

If you eat foods such as white bread, pastries or lollies your blood sugar rises rapidly. Your body responds by releasing insulin to reduce it. It sometimes reduces it too much.

Okay, so when your body experiences that "crash", it releases stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol. Now what do you think those hormones feel like?

Anxiety.

Trembling hands. Irritability. Brain fog. Feeling like something isn't quite right. Scientific studies have found diets that include many fast-burning carbs are linked to a higher likelihood of depression and possibly anxiety. This may affect women more than men.

Now mix that with caffeine…

Coffee and a muffin first thing in the morning is terrible for an anxious brain. Within a few hours you’ll have the caffeine rush and then the sugar crash. Obsessive worriers will get a perfect storm.

Skipping meals has the same effect. Extended periods between meals allow blood sugar to plummet. Lots of people with OCD notice their worst compulsions occur late afternoon — precisely when the energy from lunch fades away.

Pretty eye-opening, right?

5x Simple Food Swaps That Calm The Mind

You don’t have to overhaul your diet. Little changes each day can add up quickly. Here are the swaps that’ll have the biggest impact.

Cut Back On Caffeine Slowly

Don't quit cold turkey. Cutting out 4x coffees immediately can lead to headaches and irritability — which can also increase anxiety. Gradually decrease your consumption. Eliminate one cup every few days. Replace your afternoon coffee with decaf or herbal tea.

Try to complete your last caffeinated beverage before noon. That way your body has time to process it before sleeping.

Build Balanced Meals

Every meal should include three things:

  1. Protein: eggs, chicken, fish or beans

  1. Fibre: veggies, oats or whole grains

  1. Healthy fats: avocado, nuts or olive oil

This combination reduces the rate sugar enters the bloodstream. Which equals more stable energy levels and mood.

Eat At Regular Times

Eat every 3-4 hours if possible. A small handful of nuts or some yoghurt can prevent that late-afternoon crash. Easy-peasy. And it works.

Swap Energy Drinks For Water

Energy drinks = double whammy — tons of caffeine and tons of sugar. Drink water or sparkling water with a little lemon instead. Being dehydrated can also make you jittery and anxious.

Check The Labels

Pre-workout powders, some pain relievers and dark chocolate have caffeine in them. Check labels. You may be consuming way more than you think.

When Diet Isn't Enough

Here's the truth…

Food tweaks can help ease symptoms. They won't cure OCD, however. CBT with exposure and response prevention (ERP) is the gold standard. ERP involves exposing yourself to the thing you fear. You then learn not to do the ritual you usually do. Eventually the anxiety weakens.

Ideally, you should do both. Adjust your diet so your body no longer triggers false alarms. Use therapy to retrain your brain's reaction to the alarms that persist.

When considering OCD therapy costs in Sydney, keeping a food and mood diary can help you maximise the benefit from each session. Use one for 2x weeks, jotting down:

  • What you ate and drank

  • What time

  • How strong your worries felt

Take it in on your first visit. Trends become apparent quickly — and your clinician has something tangible to work with from day one.

Putting It All Together

Caffeine and blood sugar will not give you OCD. They can, however, amplify obsessive rumination so that it's louder, quicker and more difficult to ignore. For a quick summary:

  • Cut caffeine back slowly and stop by midday

  • Pair carbs with protein, fibre and healthy fat

  • Eat every 3-4 hours to avoid crashes

  • Ditch energy drinks and check labels for hidden caffeine

  • Combine diet changes with proven therapy like ERP

Tiny swaps. Huge difference. Try one change this week and see how you feel mentally.
